Many landowners and managers plant fall mast crops to attract deer in the fall. It’s effective, but planting summer fruit is even more effective. The deer will already be there, possibly in greater abundance, and feel more at home. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers an array of soft mast shrubs and trees to help fill out the whitetail’s year-round nutritional calendar.

Mulberries

Mulberries are among the fruits to ripen in late spring in the deep south and early summer farther north. Chestnut Hill Outdoors offers several varieties, including black, white and native red varieties of Everbearing Mulberry (Morus rubra). These grow in a bush-like form, providing an abundance of fruit and cover, and Black Mulberry (Morus nigra) grows in a taller tree form and produces some of the highest quality mulberries.

All trees are shipped bare-root. Size shipped: 12 – 24 inches

Plums

Chestnut Hill Outdoors also offers a pair of native plums. American (Prunus americana) and Chickasaw plum (Prunus angustifolia) produce abundant early summer fruit while also providing dense cover. Chickasaws are better suited for moderate to warmer climates, while Americans do well in all but the coldest regions.

Persimmons

Few soft mast species are more attractive to deer than riper persimmons, and Early Drop varieties from Chestnut Hill Outdoors help fill in the gap between spring and early summer soft mast and fall hard mast.

Features:

  • Height at Maturity: 30′-50′
  • Spread: 20′-35′
  • Tree Form: Central Leader
  • USDA Zone: 4-9
  • Bloom: May – June in most locations
  • Fruit Drop: August – October
  • Light requirements: Full sun
  • Soil type: Adapted to upland, wet if only seasonal and well-drained or sandy clay or loam; Ph 6.0-7.0

When selecting stock, it’s important to choose plant species specifically adapted for the local climate. One of the best tools for determining this is the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. It divides the nation into 10-degree F zones based on average annual minimum winter temperatures. These Zones or Regions are then used to describe the range in which plants are adapted to and can be grown.
