Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM R9 suppressor. Last week we got our hands on the SIG SLX556 QD rifle suppressors (yes, full auto testing is still coming). Today we spend some time with the brand new Rugged Razor556 reduced blowback AR-15 suppressor. I really like the Razor556; let me tell you why.
Thank you to Silencer Shop for loaning the Razor556 for this review.

SILENCER SATURDAY #221: Rugged Razor556 – Reduced Blowback AR-15 Suppressor
As we have said many times in the past, supersonic rifle suppressors are difficult to evaluate when it comes to noise reduction. And that fact is complicated when these silencers are mounted on short barreled rifles. On an AR-15 chambered in .223/5.56, noise reduction should probably be the fourth most important silencer characteristic behind footprint (length/weight), mounting system design, and gas flow or blowback reduction.
In the “old days”, silencers were tested based on noise reduction at the muzzle in an attempt to meet the MILSTD “hearing safe” level of 140 decibels or lower. Let’s skip over the fact that 140 dB isn’t really hearing safe and focus on the muzzle test measurement. Manufacturers designed their suppressors to minimize gas flow exiting the muzzle at all costs to achieve superior decibel readings. The problem is that the laws of physics apply to everyone, even suppressed semiautomatic rifles. All that gas is forced back into the gas system, down the barrel, and into the chamber. The results can cause uncomfortable gas blowback at best and cycling issues and failures at worst.
The solution for “blowback” reduction often focused on treating symptoms with adjustable gas blocks or heavier buffer weights. But engineers also worked to redirect gas flow inside the silencer to keep blowback to a minimum. The result also meant that noise reduction at the shooters ear was usually improved.
Rugged has designed the Razor556 to be blowback friendly – I noticed a distinct reduction in gas when compared to one of my older 5.56 suppressors on the same host.
Born from the legendary performance of its big brother the Razor762TM, the Razor556 is the first choice for lightweight durability. Rugged’s dedicated 5.56mm suppressor has decreased blowback, recoil, and flash mitigation standard while clocking in at only 13.4 oz. This suppressor is an out-of-the-box solution designed specifically to tame the sound impulse at the shooter’s ear of America’s rifle, the AR-15/M-16.

The M2 brake is a minimalist design, with slight wrench flats and a taper mounting surface.
Muzzle Device Installation:
Rugged Razor556 Installation:
The Dual Taper LockTM mount is a friction lock type mount. It utilizes a thread and taper to mount the suppressor, providing concentricity to the rifle bore. The locking collar contains two spring arms that compress on the rear taper of the muzzle device to provide constant spring pressure ensuring that your suppressor stays firmly seated during fire.
- Open the locking collar by twisting it clockwise until it stops. Use the engraved lock/unlock directional arrows engraved on the suppressor body for reference.
- Hold the suppressor by the main body and thread suppressor onto the muzzle device until it is fully seated. Do not thread on using the locking collar.
- Turn the locking collar clockwise 1/2 a turn until tight. Use the engraved lock/unlock directional arrows engraved on the suppressor body for reference.
- Verify suppressor is fully seated via the go gauge on the muzzle device. You should only be able to see “GO” on the muzzle device.
The GO/NO GO alignment feature is a simple but welcome touch. One quick glance and you can tell if the Razor556 is mounted correctly.
If the collar is tightened before spinning on the suppressor, it may not thread on properly and the result is being able to see NO GO on the brake wrench flat.
Dual Taper Lock GO GAUGE Instructions:
On the wrench flat of your Dual Taper LockTM muzzle device is a go gaugeto assist you with proper installation of your suppressor. Using the bottom of the lock collar as a visual guide, you will be able to ensure that your suppressor is properly mounted to your host firearm. When properly installed, you will only be able to see “GO” when looking directly at the locking collar on the muzzle device.
The Razor556 is quiet enough for government work – honestly it fits in with the rest of the 5.56mm suppressors in its class. A few shots without ear protection were loud, but not catastrophic. Proper expectations are the key to being satisfied with supersonic rifle suppressors. Always wear hearing protection when using rifle suppressors.
Aesthetically, the Razor556 is a slick looking can with just enough style to set it apart from being a plain black tube.
At a street price of somewhere around $700, a weight of about 13 ounces, a very capable mounting system, and the new reduced blowback design, the Rugged Razor556 is a solid choice for an AR-15 chambered in 5.56mm. Performance with simple, well thought out features make it easy to recommend as a buy for anyone in the market.
